Urban and Landscape Planning Integration

By taking full advantage of the actual building site, it maximizes the most efficient use of the joint space and the atrium situated between the existing and the new building. The visual reference to the historical situation in the North and in the South can be achieved through extended bridges and interlocking building joints.

Functionality and creative quality

Taking one round tour from the historical building to the new building, then back, in the logic room sequence, the most important view at the interface is opened up. It is similarly possible that the room can be closed for different specific Art Installation purposes. As an advantage for various exhibitions of different proportions of exhibited objects, and to intensify the room experience, different room heights are introduced. This building intends to captivate a withheld presence. Next to the bright visible concrete surface of the walls in the sculpture garden, together with anthracite-coloured, standing sculptures and premium steel structured flooring, the improved wood panels are well disguised.

Efficiency, Energy Concept and Housing Technique

The solid and passive structure (closed-up to the north and opened-up to the south), together with an efficient heat pump system and a geothermal facility, which provide a cooling condition in summer and a warming condition in winter, ensures the ideal temperature conditioning of all building surfaces. In the case of heating, the temperature conditioning of all building surfaces, providing a more consistent maintaining of temperature, ensures an optimal adaptation for the full ambience, the display surfaces, and the temperature of the exhibited items. Right on top of the internal warmth-insulation and the vapour barrier, behind the temperature conditioning of all building surfaces is the flexible prearranged architectural techniques. The often different temperature impact from the mass visitors, their concentration in that particular room or the weather change are all counterbalanced. Additionally, these measures also reduce the costly air exchange rates. However, the opening and closing of the transverse ventilation in the high chimney-type joint space further supports the ventilation of the whole building.

Dealing With the Memorial Custodial Issues

In terms of its material, the new building should rest against the colours on the historical building. Homogeneous, self-compressed concrete then rounds off with the authenticity of material structure between the historical and the new appearance.  The minimized style of the exterior form contradicts the historical building with modesty, nevertheless with subtle presence.
