Concept –Greener Glass Pole-Transom in the Park

The Kalmar Museum of Art consists of two L-shaped building structures in the park. The exhibition area is located in a pole transom, which is elevated from one pedestal in the north-southern direction. Workshops and management are connected across in the transom. The restaurant is joined with the exhibition area through one corridor on an axis. The existing and to-be-reconstructed toilet facilities are therefore also accessible from the museum. The museum shop is situated in the atrium.

The building structure presents itself powerfully from outside. The façade looks sleek and the building structure is a simple volume of a two-part ashlar.

The glass façade reflects the park landscape, and the green tone of the installed glasses makes the building visually blended in with the park. In the darkness, the glass façade should be illuminated from inside. Therefore, during the night hours, the Museum of Art boosts the cityscape in Kalmar.

Exhibition

The delivery of works of art takes place directly through one gate, which is over the foyer in the exhibition rooms or if necessary in the storerooms. Supplies are transported through one newly created junction in storerooms in the basement of the building.

The exhibition is conceptualized as “White Box”. Varying exhibitions are arranged on the ground floor. The flexible exhibition wall systems allow a free partitioning of the rooms within a division. These walls also darken the exhibition area if necessary. The exhibition area can be extended in the foyer/shop area according to each concept. The art collection is presented on the upper floor. The exhibition can be arranged with multi-rooms on a circular route. On the upper floor, natural lighting is made possible through the daylight ceiling and the lookout through the glazed outer shell in the park.

Construction

The building is a reinforced concrete construction with curtain façade. The façade consists of special insulation-coated glazing, which filters the UV radiation. The loading of the supports is directly taken care of by the pillar foundation.
