Site Location
In order to achieve local specific synergies and meet the expansion need for new production-, laboratory and management area, one medium-sized Hi-Tech company will be located in Berlin-Adlershof, which is the biggest and most modern technology centre in Germany. The choice of such concept of using this partially-used site at James-Franck-Straße offers the opportunity to double the usable area at a later stage. It is located at the street front and shaped like a U-shaped sleigh and can be extended at the back of the site according to the inner function. In between the present and the future extension, at the back of the site, 2 sports facilities can be found, which can benefit the employees with their health need. According to a circular access plan, the components of the HPLC-tubes will be delivered at the north-eastern part of the industrial hall and the finished products will be sent off at the south-eastern part of the hall. The rainwater pond in front of the head of the building serves as a rainwater drainage system.
Architectural Concept
The building is configured from two clearly defined functional areas which are readable at the façade. The U-shaped part of the management and laboratory area is positioned at the street front and reflects the internally organisational product processing in the U-shaped industrial production hall. The entry and the foyer are designed to be transparent and welcoming. Due to the individual room-size requests, all rooms are positioned in a grid-lock, with an irregularly segregated façade system. Such an articulated regular window grid system produces yet an irregularly different façade design, because of the different sizes of the rooms. In this way, by generating different sized rooms according to the inner functional need, the regularity is broken down. The tubular light court, representing the HPLC-tube, cuts the building right through from the north to the south and offers a view into the production hall on one side, and on the other side lets the light right through and into the north-southern centrally-located floors. On the façade, the light court is visible from the northern and southern opening of the management area. Access bridges connect within the three-storey high air space, and connect the north-western with the south-western wing.
Ecological Concept
The energy concept to be certified as a “Green Building” by the German Energy Agency (DENA) covers the building holistically. The integrated planning approach between architectural building physics and housing techniques supports the enhancement of energy use efficiency, therefore, builds the foundation of the economical measures in saving natural resources. The solar panels on the roof of the industrial hall, the pellet-heated-beam sources for the management area and dark beaming heating sources for the industrial hall area all serve such a purpose.
